The LayerGeo module

The LayerGeo module, together with the ProcessGeo module, is a tool for modifying structures modelled from imported scans or generated directly in GeoDict with the modules for digital material design.

Using LayerGeo, two structure models can be combined in different ways for further analysis with the modules for digital material analysis.

Digital Sand Control screens are modelled in LayerGeo by combining perforated foils (GridGeo) and wire meshes (WeaveGeo)

LayerGeo features

If the dimensions of the structures are sufficiently matching, LayerGeo can perform three operations on two structure models imported using the ImportGeo-VOL module (from CT-, µCT, or FIB/SEM-images) or generated using one of the modules for digital material design e.g. FiberGeo, PaperGeo, WeaveGeo, GridGeo, PleatGeo or FoamGeo.

  • Attach a structure model to the other at one of the cartesian planes
  • Add a structure into another, such that both structures are positioned in the same domain and overlap each other. Also possible is to add two structure models with an offset, such that they fully or partially overlap each other
  • Subtract one structure from the other, to obtain a “difference-structure”

In this way, structure models relevant for computations of fluid flow, filtration process, thermal conductivity, etc. can be built with LayerGeo before running the appropriate digital material analysis on it (e.g. FlowDict, FilterDict®-Media, ConductoDict modules, etc).

Structures that initially do not match, can be modified with the ProcessGeo module and combined or layered in LayerGeo, before running computations with a GeoDict digital material analysis module.

Examples of LayerGeo applications

  • For filtration: modelling of filter media consisting of two- or more layers.
  • For the Oil & Gas upstream sector: modelling of multilayer sand control screens.
  • For the field of composite materials:
    • modelling of sandwich structures.
    • modelling of laminates consisting of layers of carbon fibers with diverse orientations
  • For electrochemistry: combination of cathode and anode structure models with a separating layer to model a battery.
  • Removal of overlaps resulting from combining scans of a sample that is too large and has to be scanned in sections, e.g. during filter cake analysis.

Additional modules needed?

  • The LayerGeo module is part of the GeoDict Base package providing basic functionality.
  • LayerGeo combines and layers 3D (micro-) structure models that can either be a segmented 3D image (microCT-scan, FIB-SEM) imported with ImportGeo-VOL or a 3D structure model created with one of the GeoDict modules for Digital Material Design, e.g. FiberGeo for nonwovens, GrainGeo for granular or sintered structure models or sphere-packings, or FoamGeo for foams.
  • LayerGeo is functionally independent from other GeoDict modules but, since it combines and layers structure models, is valuable in combination with GeoDict modules for Digital Material Analysis (e.g. FlowDict or ElastoDict).
